Keeping a pet jumping spider has become immensely popular among invertebrate enthusiasts. These curious, intelligent little arachnids are known for their great vision and charming personalities. If you want to keep one happy and healthy, creating a proper jumping spider habitat is the most important step. Unlike tarantulas that require massive floor space, jumpers are arboreal hunters that need vertical room to explore, climb, and weave their silken nests.
Understanding Jumping Spider Requirements
Before gathering supplies, it helps to understand how these animals live in nature. Most commonly kept species, such as the bold jumping spider, thrive in warm environments with moderate humidity. Because they spend their lives hunting in bushes, tall grass, and on tree bark, their enclosure must mimic these vertical surroundings. A well-designed jumping spider enclosure supports their active lifestyle while keeping them secure.
Choosing the Right Enclosure
The first rule of setting up a jumping spider habitat is choosing an enclosure that opens from the front rather than the top. Jumping spiders love to build their silky sleeping webs, known as web retreats, near the very top of their home. If your lid opens from the top, you risk destroying their web every time you feed or water them.
Vertical space is much more valuable than horizontal floor space for these arboreal jumpers. A small acrylic or glass enclosure measuring roughly 8x8x12 inches works wonderfully for an adult spider. Ventilation is another critical factor. Good cross-ventilation prevents stagnant air and mold growth, which can be harmful to your pet. Look for enclosures with mesh screens or precision-drilled ventilation holes on opposing sides to ensure proper airflow.
Decorating and Furnishing the Vertical Space
Once you have the enclosure, you need to turn it into an engaging environment. Since jumping spiders rarely walk on the ground, cluttering the upper half of the habitat is essential.
Consider adding the following elements to enrich your spider’s home:
- Artificial or live plants: Plastic aquarium plants or small terrarium botanicals provide plenty of surfaces for climbing and hiding.
- Cork bark or driftwood: Small pieces glued vertically or angled against the walls create natural textures for the spider to navigate.
- Ledges: Magnetic acrylic ledges placed near the top give the spider a secure spot to rest and build its nest.
Keep in mind that while live plants look attractive, they require damp soil that can raise humidity too high. Many keepers prefer artificial foliage because it is easier to clean and eliminates the risk of introducing unwanted pests.
Substrate and Moisture Control
While jumpers spend most of their time climbing, a small layer of substrate at the bottom helps maintain proper humidity. Coconut fiber or paper towels work well. Paper towels are exceptionally easy to replace during routine cage cleanings.
Jumping spiders do not drink from standing water dishes. Instead, they get hydration by drinking water droplets from surfaces. You should lightly mist one side of the enclosure daily using a spray bottle filled with clean, dechlorinated water. Always let the enclosure dry out slightly between mistings to prevent excessive moisture buildup.
Lighting and Temperature
These spiders are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day and sleep at night. They benefit from a natural day-night light cycle. If the room receives indirect sunlight, that is usually sufficient. Avoid placing the enclosure in direct, blazing sun, as the glass can act like a greenhouse and overheat the interior quickly. Maintain a comfortable room temperature between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal health and activity.
By focusing on vertical exploration space, proper ventilation, and regular misting, your pet jumping spider will thrive in its custom enclosure for its entire lifespan.
